Landing Page management made easy

Landing Pages.. they’re supposed to be simple right? We build them, we launch them, we (hopefully!) get an uplift in sales as a result and then we pull them down at some point. Easy?

The reality is that although the design process is typically straight forward, it’s the management and measurement part that gets messy. What happens in most cases today is that a separate design team or agency builds the pages,  throws the pages up onto a hosting service, and any changes are pushed back and forth via email forcing the design / developer team to pop open the code for each change.

Of course, most of the time, the same company that needs the landing pages already has a CMS, and an analytical service, however

  1. They aren’t able to manage the landing page content in their CMS due to the fact that the content is stored outside and building CMS templates takes to long, and
  2. They’re not measuring the landing page performance in context of their overall traffic and conversion goals due to the fact that the analytical data is not combined into their existing dashboards.

This leads to inefficient use of time by needed in routing instructions and waiting for the “web guys” to update the pages, and even worse, potential lost revenue due to page information being out of date.

Adobe, with the release of a new feature pack for CQ5, now has a very nice solution that spans across the Landing Page creation process from Site Design, to Management, through to Measurement.

Launching a new Landing Page with the Adobe Solution is now as simple as;

  1. Designing your site using Adobe Creative Suite
  2. Creating a new Campaign in Adobe CQ5
  3. Dragging & Dropping your HTML files into CQ5
  4. Applying the Adobe SiteCatalyst framework settings
  5. Start a workflow to have the page Activated.
  6. Measuring the success in SiteCatalyst
  7. Update content in CQ5, reactivate, repeat as needed.

For the developers reading / watching and wondering what is going on behind the scenes, the magic is done by matching div tags to CQ components, so a piece of text on the page becomes editable by adding data-cq-component=”text” to the tag. While this creates a little more work up front, I’ve found it takes no more than 20 minutes to fully tag the static html, so definitely worth the initial small time investment!

So Landing Pages can now be easily dragged and dropped into CQ5 using of a HTML design created in Adobe Dreamweaver,  modified by a content author without touching code, and tagged using the existing Adobe SiteCatalyst framework to ensure the data is capture the correct way.
