Mark's Music History

Pre 1988

Mark in a recording studio (actually a community radio station) in Katoomba.

Played in various High School bands, mostly with either Richard Wiezel or Jamie Martens.

The Colts (1988-1989)

While still in High School, i joined "The Colts", named after the local football team, The Colyton Colts. The Colts were my first 'Pro' band, in the sense that we played gigs, knew all the chords and actually sounds good. The Colts played covers of 60s, 70s and 80s songs and played in beer gardens of pubs, hotels and clubs

The Colts. I'm the skinny guy second from the left playing bass with the yellow singlet. (I broke two bass strings that day, it was hot out in the sun!)

Both myself and the guitarist were under age but back then it didn't stop us getting into clubs and playing (and drinking)

Towards the end of the band's life, we did a demo recording, with Richard Wiezel stepping in to play lead guitar.

Shades (1989-1990)

Playing covers was one thing, but it was original music that i really was into. Shades came about after walking home from school and hearing someone playing drums from a nearby house. Since i needed a drummer, i decided to knock on the front door and ask if the drummer was interested.

Thats how i met Stephen Legg, the new drummer for Shades.

The line up was as follows;

Vocals & Bass: Mark Szulc

Guitar: Richard Weizel

Vocals & Drums: Stephen Legg

Left to Right: Mark Szulc, Stephen Legg, Richard Weisel

High Ground (1990-1993)

After Shades, i was asked to join High Ground, and originals / covers band playing 60s,70s, 80s & 90s covers as well as material written by Jeff Massey, the guitarist.

The line up was as follows;

Lead Guitar & Vocals: Jeff Massey

Rhythm Guitar & Vocals: Glenn Massey

Bass: Mark Szulc

Drums: Jason Rogdweitz

(1993 - 2003)

10 years without being a band..

Ask Her is a demo song recorded between bands

NoPoets (2002-2003)

Ruth's daughter Danni & I decided to form a band, so after coming up with a few songs we placed a couple of ads in Drum Media, the local muso street press, and teamed up with Ricardo Natoli and Daniel Mann.

Playing only original music written by Danni & Ric, we played across Sydney in various venues and recorded a few songs.

The line up was as follows;

Lead Vocals: Danni Vandenberg

Vocals & Bass: Mark Szulc

Guitar: Daniel Mann

Drums: Ricardo Natoli

More information on NoPoets is available on the now archived NoPoets website

NoPoets split up after Ric decided to move to Canberra for work and Daniel decided to pursue other music directions

Demo recordings of NoPoets are located here

Zoomorphic (2003-2004)

I played with Zoomorphic for about 4 months, in which time we never gigged but recorded a few great songs. After i left the band due to work commitments i believe they played a few gigs before disbanding.

Inch by Inch is a demo track recorded shortly before i left.
